Museum of the Big Bend, Alpine, Texas
After breakfast in Marathon (believe it or not, the place I picked didn't have tea bags, but they did have fresh brewed, unsweetened tea, so I had them heat two cups in the microwave and I added sugar and half-and-half!) and a tour of Gage Hotel, I headed to Alpine, Texas, home of the Museum of the Big Bend, which is located on the campus of Sul Ross State University, a small school of less than 1,000 students.
The museum purports to tell the story of the Big Bend area of Texas, and did that job fairly well. It also recently opened a new wing which houses some Western-themed art, including a gallery of paintings by Tom Lea of the history of the beef cattle industry. The Museum also featured works by artist Fred Darge. I very much enjoyed my visit to the museum and I learned a little bit more about the Big Bend area of Texas.
