Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park: LBJ Boyhood Home

After visiting the LBJ Ranch, I drove to Johnson City, Texas, where the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park operates a Visitor Center and manages the Boyhood Home of LBJ. I checked out the exhibits in the Visitor Center and then waited for the 1:00 tour of the Boyhood Home. I was the sole attendee on the tour so it was effectively a personal tour. The Park Ranger was very knowledgeable and emphasized the influence that LBJ's mother and father had on him while he was growing up in Johnson City.

LBJ's boyhood home has been restored to its appearance during the mid-1920's, his teenage years. He lived there until he graduated from high school and left town for California. He eventually returned to Johnson City, attended college, entered politics, was elected to the House of Representatives, was elected to the Senate, became the Vice-President, assumed the Presidency in 1963, and was then elected President in 1964.

The visit to LBJ's boyhood home was truly a walk back in time to rural America in the 1920s - a window into the world that matured LBJ, as the NPS brochure proclaims.
