Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park: LBJ Ranch

After visiting the State Park, I drove over to the LBJ Ranch unit of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, which is next to the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site, on the north side of the Pedernales River.

I checked out the one room school house where LBJ attended school and where he later signed important educational legislation with his former teacher at his side. Next I stopped at LBJ's gravesite in the Johnson Family Cemetery. After that, I drove the ranch tour which allows you to get a good feel for the size of the ranch and its working elements such as the show barn which houses some Hereford cattle.

On the grounds of the LBJ Ranch is the "Air Force One-Half," a Lockheed Jetstar that flew LBJ to the ranch from larger airports. The LBJ Ranch is also home to the Texas White House, where the mat at the front door once read:  "All the World is Welcome Here." Unfortunately, the Texas White House was closed for renovations so I could only see the outside. All in all, it was an interesting and educational visit.
